Well, the door opened, which frightened me a little, and it opened on an unlighted area (the light in the stairwell having just gone out) which frightened me very much, because I thought I was in the wrong apartment. I had only been in that apartment a few times before; it was a single room, without an entryway, divided in two by a large curtain, with one side for the day, the other for the night. I can say now how I had come to know this young woman. She had been married before, and because of a lung disease, her husband had spent several years in a place where I was spending several weeks.
By saying, “I’ve forgotten,” that answer was much more exact and more important (in my opinion) than the one this story holds. At a certain point in my life I struggled stubbornly against a person I did not want to meet. I was persisting resolutely in this struggle, but I was watching it at the same time. Seeing many hidden motives in this fight, I took responsibility for them in a spirit of clearsightedness and recognized that my feelings were rather ambiguous. But it was there that my weakness lay—not in the fight itself, which sought only one outcome, but in my misguided lucidity, which made me assume that it had a different outcome and denounce its intentions.
It is in my house. Sometimes it begins to eat; sometimes, though rarely, it sleeps next to me. And I, a madman, fold my hands and let it eat its own flesh. After these events, several of which I have recounted— but I am still recounting them now—I was immediately warned (told everything) about what was in store for me. The only difference, and it was a large one, was that I was living in proud intimacy with terror; I was too shallow to see the misery and worthlessness of this intimacy, and I did not understand that it would demand something of me that a man cannot give.
